2. Ask what's actually in the polish

3. Watch the sanitation, don't just assume it
Files and buffers should be single-use. Metal implements should come from sterilization pouches, opened in front of you. Pedicure basins should be scrubbed and disinfected between guests, not rinsed. A proud salon makes its hygiene visible; a rushed one hopes you won't look.
4. Look for real technique depth
Anyone can paint nails. Look for the crafts that take actual training: precise e-file cuticle work like the Russian manicure, sculpted dual form extensions, structured gel. Salons that invest in education tend to be rigorous about everything else, too.
5. Read reviews for the pattern, not the stars
Skim past the ratings and look for repeated words. "Rushed," "assembly line," and "chipped in two days" are patterns. So are "took their time," "cleanest salon I've seen," and "lasted three weeks." Scottsdale reviewers are delightfully specific — let them do your homework.
6. Notice the pace
Luxury isn't a chandelier; it's an unhurried appointment. If every chair turns over in twenty-five minutes, your manicure will look like it. The best salons book fewer guests and give each one genuine time — that's what you're actually paying for.
7. Check how you feel when you leave
The final test has nothing to do with your nails. Did the hour feel like an errand crossed off — or like you exhaled for the first time all week? A nail appointment should be a small act of self-care, a sacred pause in a full life. If you leave more tired than you arrived, keep looking.
