What is a Russian manicure?
Also called a dry manicure or e-file manicure, the technique originated in Eastern Europe and is defined by two things: no water, and no guesswork. Instead of soaking your hands and trimming softened skin with nippers, the technician uses an electric file with fine diamond and carbide bits to gently lift and clear the dead tissue — the thin membrane called pterygium — from the nail plate and sidewalls, with millimeter precision.
How it differs from a classic manicure
- Dry, not soaked. Water swells the nail plate and skin. Working dry means what the technician sees is exactly what's there — and polish applied to a dry, unswollen nail adheres noticeably better.
- Precision tools, not nippers on live skin. The e-file removes only dead tissue. Nothing living is cut — which is why a properly done Russian manicure doesn't hurt and doesn't leave the redness a rough nipper job can.
- The polish sits flush. With the cuticle area fully cleared, color is applied right up to the skin line. The result photographs like it was painted on from underneath.
Why the results last longer
Because the nail plate is perfectly clean and dry at application, product bonds better and lifts later. And because the color starts closer to the cuticle, your grow-out gap takes an extra week or more to become visible. Many guests comfortably stretch their appointments further apart — the manicure simply keeps looking intentional longer.
